Abstract

Every year, an increase in the percentage of death caused by cancer has been observed, which has already reached an epidemiologic profile. One way to decrease those numbers is to enable the neoplasia's diagnostics at the beginning of the disease, making the treatment easier and augmenting the chances of cure for patients. During a neoplastic process, the organism suffers modifications that can be pointed out through the study of tumoral biomarkers. Since modified nucleosides are found in bigger concentrations in cancer individuals' biological fluids, those can be considered biomarkers. In this project, modified nucleosides will be investigated in blood serum. Since the analysis is in a very low concentration, the sample preparation step must be carried out in order to maximize analyses recovery. For this purpose, techniques such as liquid-liquid extraction and solid-phase extraction will be investigated herein. Factorial planning will be performed to optimize extraction conditions and the samples will be analyzed by capillary electrophoresis. The best conditions will be evaluated through the analyses’ recovery and, for that, electrophoretic peaks areas from samples fortified before and after the extraction will be compared. Besides the importance of chemistry due to the methods that will be developed, this project has a great value for the health sciences area, having an interdisciplinary character that can be, in the near future, helpful in the development of techniques used in the early detection of malignant neoplasias, an important fact on the cure of Cancer.(AU)
