Abstract

The objective of the present project is to obtain a high strength Metal Matrix Composite (MMC), reinforced by the dispersion of multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Precipitation hardening AA6061 aluminum alloy will be used as the matrix. Prior to the dispersion, the MWCNTs will be functionalized in order to improve their contact to the metallic matrix. 1 to 2% in weight of MWCNTs will be dispersed into the AA6061using the powder metallurgy route, by high energy ball milling of the precursors (AA6061 powder alloy and MWCNTs), followed by compaction and hot extrusion. The obtained extruded bars will be solution heat treated and aged in order to obtain the better combination of precipitation hardening and CNTs dispersion hardening. It is expected to reach a composite which strength is higher than the commercial AA6061 alloy in the T6 temper. In order to have a clear understanding about the CNTs effect, AA6061 bars without CNTs reinforcing will be processed by the same route, in order to establish a base line for comparison. This project will be performed in cooperation with Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Metalurgicas (CENIM - Spain), where the processing and part of composites characterization step will be performed. The CENIM and their researches have large experience in metal matrix composite processing, especially by the powder metallurgy/hot extrusion route. Besides, the CENIM has a proper infrastructure for the composites characterization. (AU)
