Abstract

Vertical craniofacial morphology can influence the masticatory muscles function and therefore may be important to better understand the occurrence of temporomandibular disorders (TMD). The aim of this study is to investigate the association between TMD signs and symptoms of adults with different craniofacial morphologies. Thus, two hundred volunteers will be selected from Piracicaba Dental School, which will be divided into two groups of one hundred: volunteers who have TMD, and volunteers who do not have TMD. The diagnosis of TMD will be performed by applying the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD), and subsequently, each volunteer will be submitted to conventional lateral cephalometric radiographs. Vertical craniofacial morphology will be determined by Ricketts' cephalometric analysis and volunteers will be classified as Brachyfacial, Mesofacial or Dolichofacial. Data collected will be analyzed and the appropriated statistical tests will be applied. It is expected to elucidate the possible relationship between TMD signs and symptoms of adults with different craniofacial morphologies.
