Abstract The French philosopher Merleau-Ponty during his theoretical work, approached Arts to enhance the development of his assertions about the concepts and philosophical discourses criticized or proposed by the author. Alongside his philosophical questioning, the author constructed his aesthetic reflection on artistic expression using the pictorial production of the early twentieth century. Therefore, establishing a notion of Modern Art that permeates his aesthetic theory and to support his thesis on artistic expression based in painting as a system (the logos). This project aims to investigate the representation of Modern Art in Merleau-Ponty's aesthetic reflection, analyzing the concept of artistic expression, the author's considerations about the painting and the language, as well as the conception of Modern Art proposed in his aesthetic thought considering theoretical and the historical discussions of the artistic field. This research uses as sources the aesthetics texts of Merleau-Ponty (Cézanne's Doubt, Eye and Mind, The Prose of the World) and other philosophical works that take part in this study.
