Abstract

There are several situations in which insulin resistance is common, such as obesity and type 2 Diabetes mellitus. In these situations it is also observed increased free fatty acid (FA) in plasma and for this reason, it has been postulated its involvement in the establishment of resistance. However, the mechanisms involved are not completely known. Recent studies are suggestive that the saturated fatty acids can impair mitochondrial function in skeletal muscle cells. Thus, this project will evaluate if insulin resistance induced by high-fat diet is related to mitochondrial dysfunction in skeletal muscle. For this, rats will be submitted to the administration of high-fat diet during three weeks. After this period, analysis of the mitochondrial function and expression of genes involved in mitochondrial biogenesis and metabolism will be carried out. (AU)
