Abstract

This project corresponds to a PhD stage for the student Andreza Candido Matias. In her PhD work, the student has used different commercial chelating agents for copper and zinc, which were membrane permeable. The objective was to study the effects of the imbalance of these metals on cell viability or death and generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in cells in culture. She obtained promising results during her work in Brazil and therefore we are planning a collaboration with the research group of Dr Pascale Delangle in Grenoble, France. Novel copper(II) tripodal ligands, will be designed and synthesized to get more efficient chelating agents than the commercially available ones, which would be able to cross the plasma membrane and chelate copper (II) intracellularly. The student will learn from the expertise of the French group to synthesize and purify these tripodal-type copper (II) ligands, and upon returning to Brazil after 7 months of internship, these ligands will be used in cell cultures to finalize this project. Also a profitable collaboration will be established, with also a French student interchange and a visit of Dr Pascale Delangle to Brazil. (AU)
