Abstract

During the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the discipline rhetoric was linked to music to promote a sense which the listeners assimilated and comprehended the piece as a speech-way knowable, assuming a universal social-communicative model, articulated as an exercise of recognition among peers and a way to understand and talk about the experienced time. This research project aims to study the compositional process in the music of the Portuguese compositor, resident in São Paulo from 1774, André da Silva Gomes, taking into account the perspective of discourse models available (theory of affects and/or topical discourse). The primary objective is to map the semantic construction models and their possible consequences arising from its reception. Unfortunately still there are a few studies dealing with the systematic use of these theories in Lusitanian soil. Thus, the research unfolds not only in understanding the semantics and metaphors models of music, but verify the use of the same processes in the André da Silva Gomes's C major Mass. From this study, the project envisions to observe the theoretical belongings before the school tradition that Silva Gomes received in Portugal and the demands of meaning, as a composer of the São Paulo Cathedral.
