Abstract Salivary gland tumors is a highly heterogeneous group that accounts for 3 to 6% of all head and neck neoplasias, with an incidence ranging from 0.4 to 13.5 cases/100,000 individuals. Due to their clinicopathologic variability, the diagnosis of these tumors becomes a real challenge even for experient pathologists, which avoid the identification of biomarkers with effective clinical relevance. Therefore, the study of cellular proliferative and angiogenic markers, as well as the cellular DNA content definition could significantly improve the diagnosis of these neoplasias and favor a better understanding of their clinical behavior and prognostic determination. In the present study, using tissue microarray and immunohistochemistry techniques, and with the help of softwares and algorithms for digital analyses, the authors aim to characterize the proliferative pattern of 367 cases of salivary gland tumors with Ki67, Mcm-2 and HOXB7 biomarkers, as well as to evaluate the expression pattern of the angiogenic-related receptors neuropilin-1 and neuropilin-2, and the DNA content by image cytometry, correlating the results obtained with clinical variables, and, therefore, identifying the role played by these factors in the benign and malignant salivary gland tumors behavior, emphasizing their importance for the diagnosis and prognostic determination of patients affected by these neoplasias. | |
