Abstract

This project aims to analyze the evangelistic campaigns of the Brazilian Baptist Convention, realized by its worldwide and national missions unions. In other to do this, it uses the theoretical postulates of the Discourse Analysis, more specifically, the postulations of Maingueneau about the constituent discourses and the functioning of simulacrum in relation between discourses. The research corpus is a set of materials from the campaigns of Baptist missionary unions. These materials are posters, leaflets, videos, magazines, newspapers, songs. This research is based on four hypotheses. They are: a) the need of world evangelization defended by the Baptist discourse is derived from a position of the religious discourse as constituent discourse, which proposes itself as a guardian of the true faith forgotten by the others discourses; b) the Baptist discourse builds an image of its other as the one that needs to be evangelized. This image is sustained by one range of simulacrum and stereotypes; c) the fact of the missionary discourse presents itself as a solution for all kinds of problems, not only for the problems related with the faith, is a typical functioning of the religious discourse; d) in spite of the missionary discourse intends to look like a tolerant discourse, it is an ethnocentric and totalitarian discourse, that intends itself as an universal truth. This project waits to contribute for the discourse studies, mainly, the studies about the relation between discourses and the functioning of the religious discourse.
