Abstract

There is a growing concern about the quality of life in bipolar patients, however, only a few studies can be found regarding the quality of life in childhood and adolescence, and rarely do those refer to the quality of life in children and adolescents with Bipolar Disorder (BD). A study that evaluates children and patients children with bipolar disorder can help to understand their quality of life. Objectives: To assess the Quality of life of children and adolescents with BD comparing the data obtained in this population with the assessment of Quality of life in children of patients with BD and a control group with no history of psychiatric illness. Methods: all children and adolescents with bipolar disorder were outpatients at the Institute of Psychiatry (Bipolar Disorder Research Program, PROMAN), University of São Paulo Medical School, São Paulo, Brazil. , their parents or legal guardians will be invited to participate. Healthy controls will be invited by advertisements in the community. The evaluation of children will be made by press-K SADS-PL (Kauffman et al., 1997). This is a semi-structured interview, in which parents and children respond to diagnostic issues to formulate the psychiatric diagnoses axis I of children and adolescents according to DSM-IV (Caetano et al., 2006). The instrument used to assess the quality of life will be the WHOQOL-bref, which consists of 26 questions, two general questions about the quality of life and the remaining 24 represent each of the 24 facets that compose the original instrument.(AU)
