Abstract Urea is the most widely used nitrogen fertilizer in Brazil for the production of grains and fiber, it represents about 60% of the use of nitrogen sources. The main advantage of using urea in agriculture is the high nitrogen concentration (44-46%) and lowest price per unit of N. However, due to multiple chemical and biological reactions, urea may have higher losses due to volatilization of ammonia and also by nitrate leaching. Because of these loss factors, it is clear the importance of studying new technologies for production of fertilizers to increase efficiency in supplying nitrogen to crops. The main objective of this project is to develop formulations based on urea fertilizer by the addition of urease inhibitors and clay minerals to reduce N losses at the time of application to soil, both by volatilization and leaching, increasing agronomic efficiency. Some research studies have shown that these additives have a potential to reduce losses of nitrogen from urea. These formulations produced are going to be evaluated for their physical and chemical characteristics, as well as its efficiency in reduction of nitrate leaching, using PVC pipe soil columns, and ammonia volatilization through a open semi-static chamber, and also evaluation of a agronomic efficiency in a crop in greenhouse. This project will be developed in the Department of Soil Science ESALQ - USP, in partnership with EMBRAPA Solos, where the fertilizer will be developed at the Laboratory of Fertilizers Production Technology at EMBRAPA. | |
