Abstract

The diversification of the Brazilian energy sources is important nowadays. It is a strategy to face the need to increase the energy offer at a cost compatible with a development model that requires sustainability and minimization of environment impacts. In this scenario, cogeneration plants have a strong appeal, specially in industries where the by-products can be used as fuel. The design of a cogeneration plant is intrinsically complex because it may exist several alternatives to meet a given set of design requirements. The heuristic nature of the problem suggests its solution through expert systems. Knowledge engineering is the process to develop such systems. Knowledge engineering transcends, but does not exclude, the mere programming. Knowledge acquisition and representation are tipycal steps in the knowledge based development that are carried out previously the programming. A poor knowledge aquisiction/representantion deeply affect the programming. The objective of this research project is to develop knowledge engineering activities, mainly related to the knowledge acquisition and representation, for an expert system for conceptual design of biomass-fired cogeneration plants.
