Health related quality of life and hemodialysis: a longitudinal study

Abstract

Introduction: Health-related Quality of Life (HRQoL) is a relevant construct that assesses aspects of the life of patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) on hemodialysis and may guide health care. Investigations showed that lower HRQoL scores have been characterized as predictors of morbidity, hospitalization and mortality, as well as HRQoL may be influenced by patients´ sociodemographic, economic and clinical conditions. Objective: to analyze the evolution of HRQoL and its relationship with clinical and laboratory aspects and death of adults and older adults on hemodialysis, as well as invest in advanced resources and therefore overcoming some challenges associated with health care. Material and Methods: considering the specificities of the objectives, this is a mixed study: analytical and comparative longitudinal study (phase 1 and 2) and a proposal for an advanced in the use of technological resources in the area of information technology (phase 3). In the phase 1 it will be included hemodialysis patients who meet the precepts of the research. Clinical and laboratory data, death and survival analysis will be investigated, until the time of death, as well as survival analysis. For the interviews, it will be used the following instruments: Mini Mental State Examination, instrument for sociodemographic, economic and clinical characterization of CKD hemodialysis and KidneyDiseaseQualityofLife - Shortform. The project has been submited at the Plataforma Brasil and will be reviewed by the Research Ethics Committee of the University of Sao Paulo at Ribeirao Preto College of Nursing (EERP-USP). Data analysis will be done with the direct help of Dr. Anita Molzahn who is an expert in this area and will have a descriptive phase and statistical tests and/or regression model appropriate for the analysis of HRQoL and its relationship with clinical and laboratory aspects. In the analysis of the association between HRQoL and the outcome death, survival curves will be carried our under the Kaplan-Meier method. Statistical significance will be established at 5% (p<0.05). Phases 2 and 3 will be developed in Canada, along with the development of phase 1. (AU)
