Abstract

Chemically modified electrodes (CME) can transform the use of electrochemistry in manyareas: the direct detection and quantification of biomolecules, solar energy conversion and storage, selective electro-organic synthesis, molecular electronics, electrochromic displaydevices, corrosion protection, and electroanalysis. Carbon electrodes are very attractive for this purpose; the 2010 Nobel Committee in Physics remarked on the "ground breaking experiment" in grapheme nd such electrodes are stimulating immense interest in today's material science community. In addition to the multiplicity of applied uses, since a redox active species is tethered at the interface fundamental theories of electron transfer can be quantitatively investigated without the need to account for the effects of diffusion. This project will use radically different and improved strategies for making these modifiedelectrodes and use them for electroanalysis. The detection and quantification of various components present in the biological systems are important and hence, highly sensitive andselective enzyme based biosensors are used which can be fabricated by the incorporation of enzymes into a suitable electrochemical transducer.
