Abstract

Introduction: Preterm Premature rupture of membranes (PPROM) is considered a risk factor for early infection and sepsis in newborn. IL-8 is an important mediator and marker of infection. It is used for diagnosis of early and late infection in neonates, to exclude infection and to restrict antibiotics. Aim: the aim of this study will be to evaluate IL-8 levels of umbilical cord blood in preterm newborns after PPROM as diagnostic marker of infection. Methods: a prospective clinical study will be conducted at the maternity and Neonatal Unit - Clinical Hospital - School of Medicine of Botucatu in a year. The study will include premature infants of mothers with premature rupture membranes e 12 hours, without previous obstetric diseases. Interleukin 8 will be measured in cord blood by flow cytometry. Early infection will be defined as clinical manifestations plus Rodwell score e 3 and / or C reactive protein >1mg/dL, in the first 48 hours of life. According to clinical and laboratorial outcome, the premature infants will be classified in 2 groups: Infected and Non Infected. The groups will be compared in relation to perinatal and neonatal data and levels of interleukin 8. Statistical analyses will be performed by parametric and non parametric tests. The p value will be <0.05. The accuracy of Interleukin 8 will be obtained by the area under the curve (ROC - receiving operating curve), and by sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) (AU)
