Abstract

Recent studies showed that activation of alpha2-adrenoceptors with bilateral LPBN injections of moxonidine (alpha2-adrenoceptor/imidazoline receptor agonist) or noradrenaline strongly enhances 0.3 M NaCl intake induced by subcutaneous treatment with the diuretic furosemide (FURO) when combined with a low dose of the antihypertensive drug, captopril. However, noradrenaline injected into LPBN produces a strong blood pressure response. Peripheral injections of prazosin are able to abolish noradrenaline blood pressure response and they increase water and sodium intake produced by noradrenaline into LPBN in animals treated with FURO + CAP. These results suggest that the activation of alpha2 adrenoreceptors in the LPBN desactivates inhibitory mechanisms of water and sodium intake, but not those mechanisms related to cardiovascular receptors that detect the increase in arterial pressure. Would be interesting to verify the influence of the noradrenaline injections into LPBN and their blood pressure responses on inhibitory mechanism using a drinking monitor. To active this objective, male Sprague Dawley rats with bilateral stainless steel guide-cannulas implanted into LPBN will be used. Water and 1.8% NaCl intake will be induced by FURO + CAP sc. Lick rate analysis will be to be done using a drinking monitor. (AU)
