Abstract

The currently society has been living since the 50s a "pharmacological revolution" in which technological advances in psychiatry and neurology have allowed the development of devices that can display the physical-chemical functioning of the brain; this technology has revolutionized the field of mental health, in such a way that the paradigm of psychological distress treatment has to be based, in most cases, on the use of psychotropic drugs. Thus, the symptom has become the target to be eliminated in the treatment, seen it as a cause in itself, a phenomenon without theoretical, without history and explained as a neurochemistry deficit to be corrected by means of psychotropic drugs.On the basis of the psychoanalytic theory, we know the importance of the symptom. It has a "symbolic positivity" because it expresses an attempt to resolve the psychic conflict and once it succeeded to silence such expressiveness, then it would result in the deletion of the uniqueness of the subject. Many of the psychotropic drugs are aimed at remedying the malaise shared in our society.In this scenario, this project of qualitative research, using psychoanalysis as the analytical framework, it aims to analyze the effects of long-term use of psychotropic drugs. Patients that are using antidepressives for three years or more will be interviewed. Through this study, the objective will be to deepen the discussion about the growing use of psychotropic drugs in the treatment of psychopathology.
