Abstract

The project focuses on the issue of the integrity of complex urban areas of patrimonial interest. Integrity and authenticity constitutes fundamental requirements for the preservation of such areas, being essential for the expression of values that define cultural significance. Integrity, however, does not show a satisfactory conceptual nor operational development to allow the understanding and appreciation of such condition in the aforementioned complex urban heritage areas, despite its importance. These areas are: formed by urban elements that, among themselves, have significant relationships; composed by overlapped significance layers; related to a large number of stakeholders, and subjected to strong pressures for change | transformation. Thus, the objective of this proposal is to determine the concept of dynamic integrity in complex urban heritage areas and define the operational guidelines to verify this condition. The research hypothesis alights from the idea that dynamic integrity is a quality which may be attributed to areas that, in a changing context, incorporate certain changes and maintain their significance through time. In order to perform the research, firstly a theoretical investigation is necessary, which shall define the concepts and operational guidelines to verify the condition of dynamic integrity. During the empirical investigation, the concepts and guidelines shall be applied in two distinct case studies: an area which has undergone alterations which harmed its integrity and significance; and a second in which the changes did not affected them negatively. The fundamental documentation of empirical investigation is part of the identification, analysis and evaluation processes included on the List of World Heritage in Danger (1978-2005).
