Abstract

Surgical ultrassound is an effective device to perform accurate and selective osteotomies with no injury of nearby structures. According to literature, low intensity ultrassound waves induces local citokynes and growth factor releasing, which, in turn, stimulate bone healing. However, it is not known, if surgical ultrasound produces the same effect. Thus, the aim of this study is to evaluate, by Real Time PCR, the release of cytokines and bone growth factors during early periods of the healing of defects created by conventional burs in comparison to surgical ultrasound. For this purpose, thirty rats will be divided into two groups with 15 animals: Group I - Bur and Group II, Surgical Ultrasound. The animals will be anesthetized and the right tibiae metaphysis will be surgically exposed for creation of a 2 millimeters in diameter bone defect by using rotary bur in Group I and Surgical Ultrassound in Group II. Five animals per group will be sacrificed immediately after the surgery, at 7 and 14 post operative days. The specimens will be reduced and processed for total RNA extraction and quantification of mRNA of Runx2, BMP-2, BMP-4, Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) and TGF-²2 in each period. The data obtained will be submitted to statistical analysis with a significance level of 5%. (AU)
