Abstract

Succession is defined as changes on the structure and composition of a community over the time. It's a broadly studied process and, since the beginning, descriptive works revealed the variable, complex and context dependent nature of successional process. However, the acting factors were better understood only using experimentation. Marine communities are excellent models for this kind of approaching, since they are very dynamic and the organisms are well known and easy to manipulate. These communities are characterized by a gradual and continuous succession. Though, the stochasticity is an important characteristic of marine environment and, for that, the early configurations of incrusting community and the implications on the successional process and on the community structure later on are extremely variable. In some cases occurs the hierarchical replacement of species, while in others, priority effects takes place since the early moments, maintaining diversity at low level. In this project I am interested in manipulate the early configurations of incrusting communities and understand how these communities develop and structure from these different scenarios. I will manipulate the identity of early colonizers and the early richness of species and functional diversity and will investigate how communities develop from these different configurations. Besides that I will investigate how these different configurations act on the community susceptibility to the occurrence of invasive species. All these experiments will contribute to understand the action of each process isolated and also the integrated action in the succession. (AU)
