Abstract

A theme not yet explored by Brazilian Cinema historiography, the following project wishes to elaborate a historical panorama of Brazilian amateur cinema taking as standpoints three specific historical moments: the columns dedicated to amateur cinema written by Sérgio Barreto Filho published in the magazine Cinearte between 1926 and 1933; and the institutionalization of the photo-cine clubs in the 1940s and 1950s. A difficult term to define and traditionally thought in opposition to professional cinema, the concept of amateurism will be discussed considering international references and the multiple shapes of amateur cinema so that, in a second moment, we can elaborate a definition that allows us to group and analyze different Brazilian amateur films.
