Oropharyngeal dysphagia management in patients with HIV

Abstract

The acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is an infectious disease caused by the HIV virus, characterized by intense decrease of immune response that can result in opportunistic infections, secondary neoplasias and neurological manifestations. During the course of the disease may occur several opportunistic infections. These infections can cause swallowing disorders, also known as dysphagia. Approximately 1/3 of the immunosuppressed patients will develop some kind of dysphagia or odynophagia (pain during swallowing) in any stage of AIDS. Purpose: to characterize the management in oropharyngeal dysphagia in patients with HIV admitted to a public hospital, underwent clinical assessment of swallowing. Method: this is a retrospective study, to be realized through a data collection from patients' protocols admitted at Hospital São Paulo (HSP), sent to Serviço Integrado de Fonoaudiologia (SIF), in the period from December 2007 to December 2011. It will be analyzed protocols of 44 adult patients with medical diagnosis of HIV, being 30 males and 14 females. (AU)
