Abstract

The subfamily Tegulinae comprises 40 species allocated in the genus Tegula and the monospecific genus Norrisia. The positioning of tegulines is still uncertain, often switching between the families Trochidae and Turbinidae. The systematic arrangements proposed for this taxon are not consensual or supported by phylogenetics. Thus, there is a clear need for detailed studies on the evolutionary relationships, taxonomy, and anatomy of tegulines. This practice aims to obtain the broader data sampling necessary to clarify phylogenetic relationships, as well as to allow a more accurate arrangement of the clades within Tegulinae. Therefore, the main objectives of the proposed internship are: a) to complete the sampling of taxa, thus obtaining the largest possible number of morphological characters for cladistic analysis; b) to analyze the type species of Tegulinae; c) to obtain access to all relevant literature; d) to develop studies in collaboration with other researchers. This study is justified by the construction of a general reference to biological diversity and evolutionary history, which is frequently lacking in taxa that do not have specialists. The project was scheduled for a six-month stay abroad: five month in the Smithsonian Institution - National Museum of Natural Hystory (Washington, D.C.), for all analysis above cited; and the six month in the other major American collections for analysis of the type material: American Museum of Natural History, New York (a week); Museum of Comparative Zoology, Boston (a week); Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago (a week); Natural History Museum of Los Angeles Country, Los Angeles (a week) e The Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia (a week).
