Abstract

Acute myocardial infarction is a major cause of disability and death in Brazil and in the world and represents a challenge for public health is therefore of great value the development of public health efforts to decrease the incidence and complications. Generally, the acute ischemic event manifests as retrosternal pain that radiates to the left arm and jaw, which may be present nausea, vomiting, diaphoresis, and dyspnea. The extent of myocardial damage is directly proportional to the duration of the ischemic event, so the more rapid identification of symptoms and seeks treatment, the better the prognosis. The difficulty in correctly identifying the symptoms contributes to the delay in seeking treatment. Thus, this community-based prospective study aims to identify the level of knowledge about acute myocardial infarction in the urban population in the city of Marília-SP by applying a questionnaire after reading a clinical case for passersby to several sites that have between 18 -80 years. Initially will be collected demographic data of respondents and then will read a typical clinical case of acute myocardial infarction. The respondent must then answer the open questions read by the interviewer aimed at the recognition of acute myocardial infarction, seeking emergency service, knowledge about treatment, risk factors involved in coronary heart disease, and acute medical specialty appropriate for patient follow-up.(AU)
