Abstract

The coagulopathies have been reported in dogs with different types of malignancies. Despite knowledge about hemostatic changes , the hypercoagulable state in veterinary medicine is rarely diagnosed in life, since laboratory tests for evaluation of hemostasis are not performed routinely. Approximately 50% of human patients with cancer and 90% of patients present with metastatic changes in coagulation tests. Both the hypercoagulable state as hypocoagulable may be associated with DIC, depending on the evolution of the disease. Given the scarcity of information about the integrity of hemostasis in dogs with malignant tumors, this research proposes the hypothesis that hemostatic alterations are present in these animals and then, underdiagnosed. The objective of this study is to determine the values of platelets, prothrombin time (PT), thrombin (TT), activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), fibrinogen values and D-dimer levels in dogs with different types of malignancies. Patients that will be evaluated are: 10 dogs with mammary carcinomas, 10 with visceral hemangiosarcoma, 10 with multicentric lymphoma, 10 cutaneous high-grade mast cell tumors and 10 with distant metastasis. The platelet count will be conducted by an automatic cell counter; TT, PT, APTT, and fibrinogen will be determined by a coagulometer; the values of D-dimer levels will be determined by latex agglutination reaction by the qualitative method. The results for the continuous variables (platelets, TT, PT, aPTT and fibrinogen), will be tested for normality of residuals (Cramer-von Mises), analysis of variance and multiple comparison test of Tukey. The nominal results (qualitative test for D-dimer levels) will be tested using the chi-square test to compare the proportions of occurrence. For all evaluations will be considered 5% alpha. (AU)
