Abstract

Many recent studies have stressed the importance of the quality of education, in the sense that it increases the stock of human capital, to the development of nations. In Brazil, despite advances in recent decades with respect to the access to education, quality of education, when compared to both developed countries and other developing countries shows poor performance, as can be seen by the marks obtained by the country in the Program orInternational Student Assessment (PISA).In this context, many articles seek to study the effects of various educational policies on student performance. Among the main policies are reducing the number of students in classrooms, increasing the number of hours that students spend in schools, increasing the salary of teachers and even new ways of financing education, such as the voucher system .This project aims to evaluate the educational policies adopted by the Education Department of the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro in the period comprising the years 2009 and 2012. For this, data on academic performance of students in the municipal of Rio de Janeiro and neighboring municipalities will be used. The program affects 152 schools in vulnerable areas of the county, and students from other schools will compose the control group. The data will be obtained through standardized tests such as the Prova Rio and Prova Brazil.
