Abstract

This ethnography intends to understand how the National Truth Commission (NTC)becomes part of a set of actions to confront the violence occurred during the Civil - Military dictatorship (1964-1985), also thinking how its constitution challenges organized sectors of Brazilian society that articulate current demands for rights and justice to political speeches and memories about that period. The research should look to the forming process of NTC in a historical perspective on the transition to democracy in the country, and for the initial development of the discussions during the field research. In this process, I am interested in understand how the state and sectors of society reflect on the categories widespread for international agreements on human rights, notably the Organization of American States and the United Nations, which Brazil is a signatory, producing categories and articulating specific means that define the notion of human rights violations in the debates on the NTC.
