Abstract

Septins are part of a protein family of guanine nucleotide binding that have been found in several eukaryotes, but never in plants. These proteins were reported playing roles in cytokinesis, cell structure, and exocytosis, but little is known about its mode of action. Moreover, septins show the ability to interact with other septins to polymerize in hetero filaments assembling higher order structures. This project aims the functional characterization of the septin of the unicellular Chlamydomonas reinhardtii algae, a model eukaryote that diverged early from a common ancestor of the plants and metazoans. As result we expect to help understand the fundamental role this protein plays in C. reinhardtii and also clarify the controversial issue about the existence of functional homo filaments of septins. Chlamydomonas is an attractive model for the study of septins in vivo, because in addition to the well established protocols for cultivation and transformation, it presents a single septin, unlike other eukaryotes studied so far.
