Abstract

Listening to the latest works of Dorival Caymmi (1914-2008) it is not difficult to notice that the images (of laziness and sensuality in a black or mestizo musical genius) associated with him was not simple or apolitical. His songs, always filled with black people from Bahia in its lyrics and broadcast in LPs, CDs or television shows were probably intentionally related with the discursive maintenance/shift about race and regional representation of Brazilian people. This project aims, analyzing the sounds themselves, interviews, photographs and other historical documents, to do an original research in 1. the compositions of Caymmi and the public homages for him; 2. his insertion and, specially, the uses of his work on the Atlantic racial debates; 3. his specific influence on the Bahia and black Brazilian identity discourses.
