Abstract

The Brazilian cattle herd is mostly zebu breeds animals, and Nelore is the most economically important of them. These individuals are adapted to tropical environment, they are heat tolerance, parasites resistant, and they have good reproductive performance, factors that contribute to higher productivity. Most breeding programs has been on the basis of Weight and weight gain characteristics, through performance information to all related individuals in the population, giving greater genetic gain and increased inbreeding rates. On the other hand, genomic selection can contribute to reduce the inbreeding rates, generation interval and maintenance of genetic variability, because of more accurate genomic estimated breeding values of young animals. Thus, appropriate methodos can enable genomic selection and contribute to genetic improvement of Nelore cattle. (AU)
