Abstract

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a well-known analytical technique to analyse solid, liquid, gaseous and aerosol samples. It shows, however, a lower sensitivity, compared to other spectrometric methods. One of the approaches to overcome this limitation is to use a double pulse (DP) configuration. In this way, the LIBS sensitivity can be improved due to a better coupling of the laser energy to the target and to the ablated material, leading to more efficient production of analyte atoms in the excited state. This project aims to build and characterization of an apparatus DP-LIBS. The system will be used for soils characterization in order to develop methods rapid, accurate and reproducible. The samples studied in this project are soils derived of the Amazon rainforest. As no or little sample preparation is necessary, this technique can be considered environmentally clean because it does not generate chemical waste. The use of the DP technique will allows to enhance the line emission intensity, when compared with conventional single pulse LIBS, and to reduce the duration of the continuum spectrum, thus increasing the overall analytical performances of the technique.
