Abstract

In the last 20 years, Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) has become one of the most promising analytical techniques, whose applications are mainly focused on direct analysis of solid samples. Its applications are the most diverse, since its instrumentation is relatively simple and can be portable. In addition, it presents high analytical frequency, multi-elementary character, and reduced handling of the samples. In particular, the LIBS has great potential application in Agriculture, with emphasis on soil analysis aiming at the determination of carbon, macro and micronutrients. Despite, the potential already highlighted, the LIBS present great challenges to be overcome, especially in quantitative analysis in complex samples. Despite, the potential already highlighted, the LIBS present great challenges to be overcome, especially in quantitative analysis in complex samples. Among these challenges, the most prominent is the matrix effect that impairs the precision and accuracy of the measurements, limiting their application in routine analyzes. One of the ways to overcome matrix effects is by using appropriate calibrations. Therefore, this research project intends to evaluate different calibration strategies in LIBS, to overcome matrix effects in the determination of carbon, macro and micronutrients in a soil sample. Recent calibration strategies called "non-traditional calibration" such as: Multi-Energy Calibration (MEC); One-Point Gravimetric Standard Addition (OP GSA); One-Point And Multiline Calibration (OP MLC); Two-Point Calibration Transfer (TP CT) and Single-Sample Calibration (SSC) will be evaluated. The calibrations will be tested, together with different data treatment strategies, in order to minimize signal variations and minimize differences in the sample matrix. The applications of these calibrations can enhance the use of LIBS in soil analysis, opening possibilities for the LIBS to be implemented in routine laboratories. (AU)
