Abstract

Systematic studies dealing with analysis of plant materials by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) with different lasers are still necessary, and one would expect that matrix effects could be minimized by using either nanosecond lasers at UV or femtosecond lasers, which generally provide ablation processes less dependent on physical and chemical properties of the matrix. The aim of this project is to investigate the performance of nanosecond laser at 266 nm, in terms of precision of measurements and trueness, for the simultaneous determination of Ca, K, P, Mg, B, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn in leaves from different plants species. In a second step, it will be evaluated a femtosecond laser for the determination of the abovementioned elements in plant materials. Experiments will be performed with a Nd:YAG laser (6 ns, 266 nm, 10 Hz) and a Ti:Sapphire laser (35 fs, 780 nm, 10kHz), and a spectrometer with Echelle optics and ICCD. Test samples will be analyzed either as pressed pellets or dried leaves. In general, this study will contribute to the PhD thesis entitled "Sampling strategies in LIBS analysis of plant materials".
