Abstract

The prevalence of epilepsy is 0.5% to 1.0% of the population in developed countries, this can be higher in developing countries. Among the children affected, 20% to 30% have seizures refractory to antiepileptic drugs (DAES). The ketogenic diet is a non-pharmacological treatment used worldwide for the treatment of children with refractory epilepsy effectively well documented in the literature on seizure control. The composition of the ketogenic diet is based on high-fat, low-carbohydrate, moderate protein content. Some studies show that there is an inadequate intake of macronutrients and micronutrients justifying nutritional supplementation in patients treated with the ketogenic diet. However, these studies do not quantify and establish which nutrients present such inadequacy. This study aims to estimate the prevalence of inadequate intake of micronutrients and macronutrients of the ketogenic diet, and compare consumption with dietary prescription. Diet composition and food consumption will be evaluated in three food records using the Food Processor software and compared with appropriate recommendations for age.
