Abstract

Commercially pure titanium (cp Ti) and Ti-based alloys, especially Ti-6Al-4V (TAV), are widely accepted for the manufacture of orthopedic and dental implants systems due to their excellent mechanical, physical, and chemical properties. However, both the increase in the world population's age and higher demand for implant rehabilitation in individuals who have poor bone quality, stimulate the search for materials that have better mechanical compatibility and that do not contain toxic elements such as Al and V. Furthermore, there are innumerous treatments performed on Ti and its alloys in order to induce and/or enhance osteoinduction and, simultaneously reducing the adhesion of microorganisms. Thus, the aim of this study is to evaluate the properties of Ti-35Nb-7Zz-5Ta (TNZT) multifunctional surfaces, a new titanium-based alloy, obtained from the anodizing process. TNZT surfaces will be compared with those obtained from cp Ti and TAV before and after anodizing functionalization with calcium and phosphorous ions, using different electrochemical potentials and time. Metal surfaces will be characterized by analysis of chemical composition (X-ray Fluorescence Microscopy and/or Plasma Emission Spectrometry), the crystal structure (X-ray Diffraction), the phase morphology (Optical Microscopy), topography surface (Scanning Electron Microscopy), surface roughness, hydrophilicity (determined indirectly by measuring the contact angle) and Vickers hardness.(AU)
