Abstract

Bariatric surgery has been considered the most effective treatment for severe obesity because it can reduce weight and improve medical comorbidity such as diabetes and hypertension. The number of surgeries has been increasing globally, but the specialized public surgical services have been facing long waiting lists. Our study aims to investigate the social, demographic, anthropometric, clinical characteristics and identify the referral procedures of patients enrolled at the Ambulatório da Unidade de Cirurgia Bariátrica do HC-FMUSP. It is an observational, descriptive study that will invite, between February and June 2013, approximately 220 subjects to participate in the research project at the time of enrollment in the outpatient clinic. Data collection includes semistructured interviews and weight and height measures. With the present study, it is expected to characterize the population who demands bariatric surgery at the Hospital das Clínicas, and its results may contribute to the discussions about the importance of prioritizing criteria in the waiting list for bariatric surgery.
