Abstract

The International Parent Survey (IPS) is a web based survey of parental views on various aspects of family life and parenting. The IPS has been developed to address the gap in the population level assessment of parenting, since there are currently no existing population level, cross-national comparisons of parent needs and preferences, targeting potentially modifiable risk factors which could be tracked over time, as an intervention is implemented. The present research aims to develop a pilot study in Brazil in order to assess the possibility of a subsequent IPS research. Participants will include parents of children aged 0-10. The pilot study will be conducted with 200 parents in a cross-sectional design. As many Brazilian parents don't have access to the internet, the survey will be collected in computer rooms of schools where the participants' children study. The procedure will follow a 2-part schedule. Part I (In Brazil): a) Elaborate the pilot survey proposal (review national literature, statistics); b) Contact school counsellors to establish a partnership to collect the data; c) Submit the proposal to the Ethics Committee in order to collect the data; d) Recruit psychology undergraduate students to help with data collection; e) Train the students to become research assistants and present them to the school counsellors. Part II (In Australia): f) Translate the existing IPS into Brazilian Portuguese, using a translation protocol; g) Submit the translated IPS for the Project Management Committee approval; h) Recruit and collect data from Brazilian parents (the pilot study); i) Summarize and present the pilot study results to IPS Committee. The data collection involves the application of a questionnaire to be responded online by Brazilian parents. The questionnaire may include questions about: parenting style, child behaviour and emotional difficulties, parenting efficacy, parental adjustment (depression, anxiety, stress), preferences for parenting support (if they think it is needed and what type of program do they want). The data will be integrated in a survey system (Qualtrix) which has analysis tools. Statistics analysis will be conducted with SPSS. (AU)
