Abstract

This project aims to complement the Scientific Initiation Research Project entitled "Analysis of the patterns of antibiotic sensitivity in pioneer strains of Streptococci from the oral cavity". In this project, we identified in the oral cavity of 2 to 16-month-old children, a high prevalence of strains of Streptococcus salivarius, which were resistant to several classes of antibiotics (beta-lactams, tetracyclines, macrolides, and aminoglycosides). Among the 21 children studied, a total of 79 S. salivarius strains were resistant to one or more antibiotics. Among these, 26 were resistant to two or more classes of antibiotics indicating a multidrug resistance phenotype. The objective of this BEPE project is to identify genes involved in the phenotype of resistance to multiple antibiotics in the strains of Streptococcus salivarius isolated from the oral cavity of children who were 2-16 months of age. This internship will be performed at The Forsyth Institute under the supervision of Dr. Margaret J. Duncan, Department of Microbiology, The Forsyth Institute, Cambridge, MA, USA in July 2013. (AU)
