Abstract

Phormidioideae, one of the most representative subfamilies of Cyanobacteria, comprising 10 genera, is considered one of the most abundant, frequent and diversified groups, occuring in a wide variety of habitats. Although tropical and subtropical regions exhibit great diversity of these organisms, the flora of Phormidioideae remains poorly known, including Brazilian ecosystems. The simple morphology of this group and its morphological plasticity become confusing the distinction of species and genera. Considering the importance and the representativeness of genera of Phormidioideae, this study aims to evaluate morphological and molecular characteristics of populations of Phormidioideae. The samples were collected in different regions of Brazil and are maintained in artificial culture in Biology, Ecology and Taxonomy of Algae Laboratory at Biociências, Letras e Ciências Exatas Institute of the São Paulo State University. This study intend to identify the populations and confirm those already identified. The proposal will contribute to a better understanding of the diversity of the subfamily. (AU)
