Abstract

The organisms that comprise the family Oscillatoriaceae, formed by six genera, Blennothrix, Homoeothrix, Lyngbya, Oscillatoria, Plectonema and Polychlamydum, are quite frequent, occurring in a wide variety of habitats (aerophytic, marine and freshwater). The relative simple morphology and morphological plasticity associated with environmental factors make confusing the distinction of species and genera, featuring a taxonomically complex group. Considering the importance and representativeness of Oscillatoriaceae, investigations become necessary to a better definition and distinction of genera and species. This project proposes a polyphasic analysis of Oscillatoriaceae through reevaluation of diagnostic taxonomic characters for their species and genera in the light of molecular data (16S rRNA gene and 16S-23S ITS) and provides morphological, biogeographic, ecological and phylogenetic information. The study will be done from samples to be collected from Brazil, in specimens kept in Brazilian and international banks of culture, as well as in specimens preserved and maintained in Brazilian and international herbaria. The project presents issues of great importance, since it is a broad systematic work involving morphological, ecological and molecular aspects of a representative family of cyanobacteria and provide subsidies for comparative systematic analyzes of Cyanobacteria, especially for the order Oscillatoriales, providing data on biodiversity in tropical regions.
