Abstract

This research seeks to analyze the production history of the building of the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of São Paulo (1961-1969), designed by architect João Batista Vilanova Artigas (1915-1985), not as an isolated building, but as a node of important narratives series of Brazilian architecture: the so-called "Paulista brutalism" and its role in the professional reconfiguration of the architecture in Brazil; the work of Vilanova Artigas in its theoretical and practical dimensions; the construction of the campus Armando Sales de Oliveira and its bond with the national development project through the Plano de Ações of the State Government (1959-1963); and the educational program of FAU in the debate over the teaching of architecture that took the 1950s and 1960s; among others. From the analysis of the production of the work, understood as a complex, singular and synthetic process of technical, economic and cultural aspects, seeks to explain the circumstances in which they were made the choices that determined his conception, construction and legacy; material circumstances, but permeated by visual habits, ideological motivations, institutional structures and symbolic rewards. The proposed procedure is based on extensive research of original documents, testimonies, photographic and bibliographic records, focusing on the production process, the links between the aesthetics of the work, the economy of construction and social relations between agents. The research also aims to reflect on limits and validity of the conditions found in the studied work as an index of historical changes which happened in Brazilian architecture in the 1960s as a whole, thus contributing both to methodological innovation in the history of architecture as for the historical understanding of the studied period.
