Study of magneto-rheological fluid and its application in electromechanical devices

Abstract

This paper presents a project proposal for development work undergraduates, dedicated to the study and application of magneto-rheological fluids. The magneto-rheological fluid materials are relatively little studied until nowadays, mainly in Brazil. Developed in the early 1950s, his interest and application have expanded considerably in the last twenty years, especially in the industrialized centers. The magnetorheological fluid is a material that has its rheological properties strongly altered in the presence of a magnetic field, making it a controllable fluid. It can be applied in many different areas, from automotive suspensions to medical implants. This fluid will be studied by the proposed work, especially as its macroscopic characteristics are represented by the behavior of the apparent viscosity and shear stress with the magnetic field. As an application of the magnetorheological fluid is proposed to build a finely controllable electromechanical dynamometer used as dedicated to testing motors and gear motors low power and low speed. Throughout the work will be carried out tasks as developing an amount of magneto-rheological fluid enough for the proposed application, the design of the dynamometer with calculations and simulations, the construction of a small prototype, and the final functional testing and performance. At the end of the period, it is expected to provide small equipment at the Department laboratory capable of torque measurements on small engines, from the dynamometer-controlled magnetorheological fluid.
