Abstract

Satellite imagery provides an important perspective for monitoring Earth's volcanoes, especially given that routine surveillance on the ground is not economically viable. The European Space Agency (ESA) will launch two new Earth observing satellites, Sentinel 2 and Sentinel 3, which offer exciting new capabilities for volcano surveillance. Sentinel 2 will provide high spatial resolution imagery (i.e. nominal pixel size of 10 - 60 m) and moderate temporal resolution (i.e. global coverage every 5 days). Sentinel 3 will provide a high temporal monitoring capability (i.e. daily global coverage)This project aims to develop methodologies that will establish an operational global volcano monitoring system through integration of Sentinel 2 and Sentinel 3. This system will be able to: i) Monitor all volcanoes on the Earth's surface and detect new volcanic activity ii) Quantify the intensity of thermal anomalies and determine their spatiotemporal characteristics iii) Automatically distinguish between different volcanic phenomenaiv) Provide timely information for field-based teams and decision makers responsible for volcanic risk mitigation and management
