Abstract

Hydrocephalus is usually defined as a defect in the flow of cerebrospinal fluid or absorption resulting in a bulge in the ventricular system, leading to increased intracranial pressure. The treatment of hydrocephalus is usually used surgery with cerebrospinal fluid shunts. However, not all patients with hydrocephalus may be undergoing surgical treatment immediately after diagnosis, either by presenting unfavorable conditions or even submit initial ventricular dilatation. Although lesions of hydrocephalus be multifactorial, it is known that oxidative stress is one of the mechanisms involved. The edaravone is a drug that acts on oxidative stress and was recently introduced in the treatment of cerebral ischemia, but has not been tested in hydrocephalus. This study will evaluate the neuroprotective effects of Edaravone in response experimental hydrocephalus in young male Wistar rats 7 days of life will receive an injection of kaolin and 15% in the cisterna magna. These animals will be divided into three groups: control (n = 5), untreated hydrocephalus (n = 10), hydrocephalus treated with Edaravone (30mg/kg) (n = 20). The treatment groups will receive the drug every day from the first day after induction. Will be conducted behavioral tests Open Field and T-maze, studies of magnetic resonance, biochemical, histological and immunohistochemistry. It is expected that the results of this work, offer another alternative treatment in patients with hydrocephalus.
