Abstract

The paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) is a systemic fungal infection with high prevalence in Latin America, especially in Brazil, focusing mainly in adults, males and rural workers. The etiologic agent is a thermodimorphic fungi belonging to the genus Paracoccidioides. Up to date, phylogenetic studies of agents of PCM were able to identify two distinct species: P. brasiliensis (with three cryptic species S1, PS2 and PS3) and P. lutzii. With the development of biotechnology, a great deal of methodologies with DNA markers, including AFLP (Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism) is available to distinguish among cryptic species. AFLP allows the detection of genetic polymorphism in the same population of organisms from the selective PCR amplification of fragments of genomic DNA digested by restriction enzymes. This study aims to analyze the genetic diversity of isolates of Paracoccidioides species from different geographical regions, through AFLP, contributing to the understanding of the epidemiology of the fungus and serving as input to further research in order to develop strategies for disease control.
