Abstract

One of the assumptions for that ecosystems harbor high species richness is that they do not occupy the same ecological niches. The ecological niche differentiation may occur through distinct adaptations of species to their natural environments. In plants, niche differentiation occurs in the early stages of development, with seeds and seedlings of species coexisting presenting distinct adaptations to the environment. Temperature and light are the environmental factors that most influence the phase of germination and seedling development. Understanding the adaptation of species to these factors is essential for the maintenance and conservation of ecosystems to climate change and the impacts of anthropogenic origin. The Cerrado is considered a hotspot for conservation worldwide, and São Paulo state has one of the most intense pictures of devastation of this biome. One of the few preserved areas in this state is the "Estação Ecológica de Assis". In this conservation unit, Gochnatia barrosii Cabrera and G. polymorpha (Less.) Cabrera species have some differences in their distribution in the different phytophysiognomies of Cerrado. Thus, the objective of this study is to analyze aspects of regeneration niche related to germination behavior and early development of plants of these species against different conditions of temperature and light.
