Abstract

The diaphragm is the main muscle of breathing that in action with other respiratory muscles performs chest wall expansion and therefore pulmonary ventilation. The Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is a genetic recessive disease characterized by severe and progressive muscle weakness and atrophy. Occurs due a mutation in the gene encoding the 427 kDa protein, called dystrophin and affects 1 in 3,600-6,000 newborn males. The main breathing muscle affected by DMD is the diaphragm and respiratory and/or cardiac failure in these patients, is responsible for 80% of the cause of death. The mdx's diaphragm is compatible to clinical trials and similarly the human DMD, the mdx life expectancy is reduced. Considering the diaphragm weakness and the respiratory and /or cardiac failure responsible for 80% of the cause of death, this study aimed to analyze the fatigue of the diaphragm muscle, along with immunofluorescence (the wheat germ agglutinin -WGA) and hydroxyproline quantification in mdx's with different ages and thus, through this innovative technology, perform a complete muscle morpho-function analysis in this musculature.
