Abstract

The unsatisfactory thermal performance of teaching environments and the inefficient use of energy is a reality in educational institutions, impairing the performance of students due to the discomfort provided besides often generating high energy consumption with artificial conditioning, when this exists. Most of these institutional buildings are obsolete and need to go through a process of retrofitting their systems, both to meet the demand of comfort of its users, and to meet current performance recommendations. This process may include the modernization of its facilities and systems, constructive intervention and awareness projects regarding users. The objective of the research is to develop a methodology to study the viability of retrofitting institutional buildings to improve their thermoenergetic performance aiming to meet thermal comfort needs of its users and existing recommendations of energy efficiency. This methodology also involve analysis of the cost-effectiveness of possible intervention options. To meet the proposed objective, a survey will be conducted in consumption and final use of energy, besides environmental variables in areas for various activities of a institutional education building. The computational model of the building will be calibrated and validated so as to define a methodology for viability analysis justifying the choice of one or more possible interventions. The validation of the proposed methodology is an important procedure for testing its effectiveness and efficiency in other cases. Therefore, the methodology of the resulting work will be applied in another institutional education building .
