Abstract This project aims to investigate the relationship between artists and the New State. On the one hand, attempts to understand the aesthetic and political disputes of the period and, secondly, to analyze the degree and nature of the autonomy of modernist artists, particularly sculptors, to the state. The clipping of empirical research are orders of sculptures for the Ministry of Education and Health (MES) between 1937 and 1945. This research will provide new information for understanding the relationship between artistic and political elites, as well as increasing knowledge about the modernist sculptors and their field during the decades of 1930 and 1940 in Brazil. | |
