Abstract

This project intends to analyse the relationship between french theater group Théâtre du Soleil and oriental theater. We'll consider the creative process of the play Tambours sur la digue (1999) as a subject-matter, maintaining a dialogue with the traditional Japanese theater Kabuki. Among other oriental theatrical traditions that are an influence to the Soleil, the Kabuki was chosen for being a major reference to Ariane Mnouchkine, director of the company. According to her, this oriental artistic manifestation was her first example of what "real theater" would be. Tambours sur la digue was taken as a subject-matter due to it's creative process, built upon several oriental traditions, being the Kabuki among them, showing itself as a relevant object for our research.Using studies about the crossing of cultures in Theatrical process and with authors such as Patrice Pavis, Josette Féral, Rustom Barusha, among others, we'll analyse the specificity and particularities in the way Théâtre du Soleil deals with the subject of interculturalism in its creative process. We'll investigate the unique manner in which the group relates itself with Kabuki, how it establishes contact with this tradition and is inspired by it, and how some of the conventions that are present in Kabuki are specifically transposed to Tambours sur la digue.
